Mile Hill Chiropractic’s Philosophy of Health Care

Philosophy is a term from a combination of the Greek words “philos” meaning love and “sophia” for wisdom.  By definition Philosophy is the methodical and systematic exploration of what and how we know and why it is important that we know a topic. It is not just an opinion. Harris Coulter, PhD. Medical historian sums it up best: “In the area of health, chiropractors begin with a different set of assumptions, use different theoretical explanations, embrace a different philosophy, pose different questions and use different language and therapeutic solutions than medicine.”  Therefore chiropractic does not, in a strict sense, treat diseases; it treats the patient with the purpose of returning the body to a normal homeostatic (balanced) state”

The philosophy of health care through chiropractic is based on several philosophies. Vitalism states that all living organisms are sustained by vital/life forces that operates outside of the physical laws of the universe. The body has an innate ability to heal. Health comes from inside out. Holism states we are a balanced integration of body, mind, and spirit. Every cell, tissue, organ, and system exists inter-dependently and co-dependently.  The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Naturalism says that we are structured on nature’s order based on the laws of universal and innate intelligence. The body has the innate ability to heal itself and it should not be tampered with unnecessarily with drugs or surgery. Conservatism says only to intervene if necessary and then to use only those things that facilitate the body’s own healing capacity if possible.  Critical Rationalism states that reason and logic are the best tools for organizing or choosing the data collected by the senses.

According to James Chestnut scientist and chiropractor “Chiropractic is based on the now scientifically proven hypothesis that proper structure of the spine is required for proper function of the nervous system as it relates to the control and regulation of global physiology and health.” Keeping your nervous system healthy is the major reason you need chiropractic because your spine is the housing around your Central Nervous system (along with the skull around your brain) and it gets tweaked out of joint in everyday life. Chiropractors are spinal mechanics.

The term Chiropractic is from the Greek words “chiro” meaning “by hand” and “practien” meaning “to do”. Knowing what and how a healthy spine functions, we check your spine to see if it is functioning properly.  We evaluate motion and alignment using computerized tests, x-rays, measurement tools and our hands. We adjust the spine to restore motion and proper alignment so that the body can heal itself. We also educate you on what causes spinal and health problems so you can avoid them if possible. We provide workshops on how to move right, eat right, and think right to make your healing and return to wellness more effective. We provide care for not only wellness but for trauma from auto collisions, falls, work injuries and others.

Chiropractors use unique terminology and don’t dwell on pain except to document it for insurance purposes.  Instead we look at the entire spine for two reasons. Where it hurts may not be the source of pain and a serious problem can exist without pain because we are only conscious of a small portion of the millions of impulses/sensations that come into the brain each second.

We ask unique questions and do tests you won’t see with MDs (allopaths).  An unhealthy spinal joint (a subluxation) is like a cavity in a tooth.  It’s not going to go away on its own. It will only worsen until it deteriorates causing a loss of health and pain on the way.  And yes, you will have to go to the chiropractor for the rest of your life.  You go to the dentist, doctor, hairdresser, and grocery forever. Only the chiropractor specializes in screening you for spinal problems and correcting them to maximize your health potential.
